🧠 After turning 30 it’s only downhill… Or not?

At least our brains stop developing and the athletic peak has been reached. How can we keep learning and improving our skills?

I was really grumpy about turning 30. When I was 29, I desperately bought a guitar after listening to a talk by neuropsychologist Erik Scherder. He said our brains can only grow until we are 30 years old, and after that we can only slow down its decline. So, better use these remaining months to peak as high as I can, right? Apparently playing music is a good way to train your brain. Problem was, I didn’t really manage to improve my guitar playing skills, because I couldn’t get myself to practice consistently.

Consistency is key in lifelong learning and improving any skill. I found ways that make it easy for me to be consistent with my workouts, but also with learning and reading. I am physically more fit than when I was 29 and I read every day.

It’s about creating habits that you can keep up for years, not just for a few weeks or months. One of my lifehacks is listening to audiobooks while I go on long bike rides or walk my dog: at least 30 minutes of reading time, every single day!

I love these long bike rides in nature and listening to something makes the time fly by. It is something I do because I enjoy it, and not because my training schedule tells me to work out for 5 hours.

Bonus: physical activity improves your creativity and focus. I have the best ideas on my bike and find it easier to focus on any content for a longer time.

💭 What is your favourite way of learning new skills?

ps, there is hope: with consistent training you can keep your mind sharp forever! 😉
