❓ Why is it so hard telling people some of their work is not good enough, but in sports it is easy and widely accepted?

💡 This topic really fascinates me. Logically speaking it should be the other way around, because people get paid for work. Still, in any sport I have done, high performance or recreational, people seem eager to constantly point out points of improvement. In my work, I rarely hear that I could have done something better. Am I doing my work perfectly? I don’t think so.

🌱 I still remember my first retrospective at Mediaan Conclusion. Bruno Lubascher hosted a session for our team, asking everyone to write down a few points what the team should “Keep doing”, “Do more”, “Do less” and “Stop Doing”. The point that received the most votes from the team was “We want to receive more feedback”. Turned out I wasn’t the only one who loves to receive feedback and is looking for opportunities to grow. Also our team is not alone in this. For Millenials an Generation Z, having growth opportunities and getting regular feedback is one of the most important factors in keeping talent on board.

🚀 Negative feedback is an efficient way to learn if it is given in a respectful and clear way with the intent to improve. Guiding people how to not only give, but also receive feedback is key. Genuine positive feedback is just as important, giving people guidance that they are going in the right direction. 🙏🏼 Giving others more feedback is a great first step, but encouraging others to give more feedback takes some persistance and mostly trust. That is why I was super thankful when Valentin Calomme reached out to me a few days ago with some feedback about my last post. If you want to know what he told me, I have added a screenshot to this post. Probably more people had similar thoughts, but he was the only one to reach out. It is not fun to hear, but I want to know. So, no ChatGPT for writing this time.

👂🏼 So if you have any feedback for me, happy to hear about it! If it’s positive, feel free to flatter me in public. If it’s negative, even more welcome, but send a personal message please 😁.
