These are the main trends in Data Science AI that I see are most relevant to our customers right now, and I believe will be for the next the year:
Automation and Efficiency:
🏭 Until a few years ago, most of our customers needed our help with experimental AI and ML projects. Only occasionally these technologies were integrated more deeply into business processes. This has changed quickly in the last years. Now, most of the AI and ML projects we do at Mediaan Conclusion focus on full-scale operationalization, leading to more automation and efficiency. This covers a wide range of technologies, including computer vision, AI operations monitoring, predictive analytics and optimization.
Advancements in Natural Language Processing (NLP):
🗣 When I started working as a Data Scientist 8 years ago, my main focus was NLP. Custom NLP classification models could already provide big customer value, but they needed a lot of attention and were very sensitive to the quality of the training data. Text generation and even translation was not at a level someone would use in production. Now many great out-of-the-box models are available for classification, generation, translation and even interpretation (e.g. BERT, GPT4, LLama, Gemini, etc). This has made it much quicker, cheaper and easier to start with implementing NLP solutions, opening up to more possibilities.
Responsible AI:
😇 The more influential AI becomes, the more there is a need for ensuring that AI systems are fair, transparant and accountable. In my experience on projects for the financial services industry, explainability has always been a big topic. This meant we often prefered implementing simple models, like logistic or linear regression, over more complex machine learning models that perform a little bit better but are hard to explain. Especially with the rise of complex LLMs, having billions of parameters and being trained on huge data sets, this topic will become more and more important.
AI in Healthcare:
🛌 In recent years, we have seen a grow in demand for predictive analytics in patient care and hospital operations. Next to that there are many promissing advances regarding drug discovery, personalized medicine and diagnostics using AI. Being one of the industries that are under most pressure in our society, I am expecting AI will have a big impact on healthcare in the next years.
